They were back-packing in Garabaldi. The trip, an attempt to rekindle their flagging romance, failed---one disappointment after another.

Now, he crouched by the fire, brewing the last of the coffee. He stared at her as he poured it into a mug. She stared back, defiantly. He added sugar. Tension zinged between them. He added Coffee-Mate---and they knew it was all over.
